Geraci Oggi

Ultima modifica 10 luglio 2022

GERACI TODAY

Of ancient origin, it is now a municipality in the Province of Palermo, from which it is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) away.
The SS 286 road that joins the SS 113 (coastal PA-ME) with the SS 120 (PA-CT) passes through Geraci.
It can therefore be reached from both the coast and the hinterland. It is just 37 km from the sea (Castelbuono Railway Station) and 50 km from Cefalù.
Very close to the Piano Battaglia ski resort, it is an ideal place to combine sea-mountain tourism.
Going up from Castelbuono, after crossing the Sugheri forest in the locality overlooking appears a picturesque image of a "clump of houses" dominated by the spires of the ruins of the Castle.
The Castle, to visitors coming from the other side of the SS 286 at Km. 39, appears in all its majesty, resting strongly on the ancient and famous "Rocca" that was of the Byzantines, the Arabs, and finally the Ventimiglias.
The town perched on the rocky back of a hill , has an urban structure in which the medieval imprint is still evident with narrow, winding streets that widen now into "alleys" now into "courtyards," real underpasses that recall Arab architecture. Today most of the "alleys" are passable by motor vehicles.
The center of the town is People's Square, a magnificent rectangular widening in which on one side is the Madrice flanked by the Rectory House, and on the opposite side by the College of Mary, which represents the real "living room" of the town, a favorite meeting place for the inhabitants especially in summer.
Another even larger square is that of St. Antonino near the Engelmaro Tower.
The town, 1077 meters high above sea level, looks to the West at Mount Catarinesci, Pizzo Argentieri (flanked by Pizzo Dalla, Mount Cixè and Mount Spataria), which together constitute the mountain of Geraci, a place destined for wild grazing.
To the north it looks over the Tyrrhenian Sea and on clear days the Aeolian Islands can be seen. To the east it looks at S.Mauro Castelverde, Pollina and Mongibello (Etna), which until the end of May shows its snow-capped peak and often plume of smoke. To the southeast one glimpses the taller houses of Geraci. At the foot of the town are the valleys of Pianistrello, Zafferano, Pantano and Muricello. The working population is mainly employed in the primary sector )agriculture-pastoralism). The only industries present are: housing and public works combined with some crafts (blacksmiths, carpenters, stone workers etc.) and the bottling plant for the springs of oligomineral waters. A good portion is employed in the service sector (Public Administration, Commerce and Transportation).
About a third of the population is made up of retirees and young people looking for a better future that they can build through the tourism development of our country.
PRODUCTION: The products of agriculture are: wheat, barley, oats, broad beans, chickpeas, lentils, peas, fodder (sulla and vetch), vegetables (beans, tomatoes, lettuces etc.) wine , oil and fruit.
The territory of Geraci has a significant altitude so intensive agriculture is not possible.
WOODS PRODUCTS: Mushrooms, asparagus, chestnuts, almonds etc.
FARMING: The animals present in the territory of Geraci: Goats, sheep, cattle, horses, pigs etc., which still provide as for centuries meat, cheese, ricotta, caciocavallo etc.
CRAFTSMANSHIP: Wood products: agricultural tools (ladders, barrels, doors, work tools etc.); Iron products: (wrought iron work and for construction); Embroidery: (tablecloths, sheets, etc.). Knitting, crocheting etc.
CUISINE: Excellent and genuine.
TYPICAL SWEETS: Cassata, vuccunetta, serafineddi, Easter lambs, cookies, Savoiarde etc.
