Castello dei Ventimiglia

Ultima modifica 10 luglio 2022

Onde Hierace, e quella nobil terra

d’aspra contesa
fieri rintocchi contro Aragonesi

VENTIMIGLIA CASTLE

Above a massive basaltic rock, on whose slopes the industriousness of Geraci's inhabitants ferments, lie the ancient and glorious remains of the "Manor House" of Geraci. The building was believed to be the first western defense of the vast county.
The locality is privileged because of its inaccessible topographical position.
From the Northeast and South sides the "manor" was defended by nature, and in the points where the rock presented some strategic weakness, it came to remedy with some masonry works, in order to make the "Rocca" impregnable.
From the west side "the path opened up pel declive" until it reached "the esplanade in front of the drawbridge," which once pulled left open the chasm of the moat.
From a technical-military point of view, the Geraci fortress stood out for its mighty structure and resistance that made it unassailable.
Inside, the rooms had a military distribution and location, devoid of luxury. It housed many garrisons and was prepared to withstand long assaults. The irregular plan area followed the unevenness of the rock. Facilities disengaged underground where food supplies, water reserve cisterns and prisons were stored.
On the first floor were the stables, kitchens, weapons rooms, ovens, rooms for the Vassals and armigers, and slits in the walls for the marksmen.
The floor above was used as the residence of the count's family, the seat of administrative services, coordinating councils and logistical plans. The battlements crowned the building. The only vulnerable point was the moat side.
In the courtyard there was a small door from which one reached by a secret corridor over the moat, up which one reached the esplanade of the Castle; another dungeon led to the Church of St. Bartholomew outside the walls, following the whims of the rock. At the bottom was a water cistern.
It was most likely built by the Greek-Byzantines; a Moorish window testifies to the sign of the Muslim Empire; then came the Normans who transformed it to the needs of war. With the Aragonese and Ventimiglias it became a real military fortress. It is from that period that the urban perimeter was closed with large gates at the points, "Porticella Superiore, Porticella Mediana, Porticella Inferiore, Porta Baciamano, Porta Santa Maria." Signs of this can still be glimpsed today.
In 840 the Fortress of Geraci capitulated to the fierce Emir "Ibni Timna" who expanded and modified the fortress.
In 1062 the Norman Roger I conquered the city of Geraci and gave it in vassalage to his nephew "Serlone."
In 1169 Count Roger of Creone, increased the Rocca's means of defense.
In 1269 the "Rocca" of Geraci reappears in the annals of war.
Having shattered the Swabian dynasty, following the defeats suffered by Manfredi on the Garigliano (1266) and by Corradino at Tagliacozzo (1268), Sicilian partisans attempted to thwart the Angevins, but to no avail. Charles of Anjou gaining the upper hand wiped out the partisans and among them Arrigo Ventimiglia, who was ousted in 1269 after a tenacious Angevin siege of the fortress of Geraci.
In 1337, Francesco I Ventimiglia was accused of treason for refusing to take part in the Parliaments called by the king. These aided by the Chiaramonte and Palizzi, bitter enemies of the Ventimiglias, besieged the "Rocca" of Geraci, which capitulated, thanks to the Geracesi who, not wanting to take part in the battle, opened the city gates to the besieging troops. ( The gate , from where the besiegers entered was called the "Kissing Gate," precisely because the Geracesi knelt before the king kissing his hand in submission). The count trying to save himself lost his life. The episode of death is not very clear. Some say that he threw himself off the cliff (today Mandolilla alley) with his horse blindfolded ; others say that he was robbed and killed by two young men ; still others, and it seems more likely, that during the siege he was found wounded by Count Valguarnera and given into the hands of the soldiers who made havoc of his body. It was on February 3, 1338. The people remembered the painful page with the verses :

"CASTEDDU DI JRAGI MALIDITTU - ROCCA VISTUTA DI SANGU E DI LUTTU.
Later, the great Torquato Tasso redeems the sad memory by extolling Prince John III Ventimiglia, lord of the Madonie Mountains
And from the green foothills to the negro limb
Of the great African sea the lofty deeds
Onde Hierace, and that noble land
Appreciates less the giants to the stone clasped,
But there carves Jerace the white marbles
In which the ancient deeds other looks back
But only John I choose, and only dare
To compare him to the prisco secol.
Today the ruins of a fortification survive whose architectural lines are difficult to establish.
One notices the severed corners of the towers, the gashes of the loopholes, the Moorish window, the heavy arches of the underground passages, within the empty or debris-filled cisterns. Only the little church of St. Anne reigns over the ruins. In it was kept the simulacrum of St. Anne (the skull), later transferred to Castelbuono.
Its slope overlooking the mountain is a rustle of pine needles that gladdens the heart of those whose gaze rests on it.
IN DEATH OF FRANCESCO VENTIMIGLIA by Anonymous.
Ergesi high on craggy cliff
Gazing around the Madonie Mountains
Sovereign, to the heavens strained.
Although always the seren does not shine
diffuse halo of arcane light
On her glows.
They rise ancient on the summit of the little village
As if to challenge the oblivion of centuries
Of the proud castle
Ancient ruins, arches and broken walls,
Dawning with stars at the flickering
And black caves.
And the bells of palatine church
That one day rang to fatal guerrilla warfare
Of bitter strife
Proudly tolling against the Aragonese
Calling forth Francis Ventimiglia
And the Geracesians.
In vain they defended St. Anne and the country,
But alone, and betrayed, and despairing,
the poor Marquis,
From the alley Mandolilla grimly looking
Strong spurred 'his blindfolded horse.....

The Archaeological Park of the Ventimiglia Castle.
Another piece has been inserted along the road leading to the redemption of this Community of ours.  Thanks to the efforts of the municipal administration, the Archaeological Park of the Castle of the Ventimiglias has been realized.
It is a further attention to a site that, despite the passage of years, still preserves intact the memories of the "golden" period of Geraci's history.
The excavation and cleaning work revealed architectural structures, traces of paving, cisterns, walls and towers, redrawing, for the first time, the entire perimeter of the ancient Rocca.
In the first phase, the wall structures facing the main facade of the Chapel dedicated to St. Anne were cleaned and then the turf was decorticated. On the north side, part of the original floor made of stones placed flat was brought to light. Emptying the cistern brought to light the entire access staircase to the cistern compartment where a medieval bronze coin was found. Under the floor, a cistern feeding channel can be glimpsed.
Pavements: Layers of vegetation were removed highlighting the surviving types, namely the pattern of the paving of the churchyard in front of the Castle Church and the steps that once connected the square of St. Julian's to the side entrance of the Castle Chapel. Cleaning of earthen gaps and compaction of the rubble by hand-beating.
Cisterns: The structures were used to collect rainwater. The interior surfaces are barrel-vaulted.  The intervention focused on the stability of the building and the preservation of the shreds of earthenware plaster.
Masonry Texture.  The intervention consisted of cleaning and restoration of the masonry structures in the areas surrounding the church. The cleaning operations were carried out by hand with sorghum brushes and biocides to eliminate the action of chemical and mechanical degradation. The structure remained as it came to the present day, with no attempts to restore it to its former glory. Thus at the site one does not relive the splendor of the medieval castle, but one can feel the passage of history.
The Keep: The work (cleaning of pests, reconstruction of the bedding mortar by injections etc.) was carried out with a view to pure preservation. What has come down to us is a shred of a cantonal of one of the Castle Towers.
The stones of the manor house continue to tell the story of the life, loves, battles, stories and legends of a Borgo that characterized the political, military and cultural events of 14th-century Sicily.
Visiting the site one can breathe in an atmosphere of power, strength and grandeur. The manor, whose fortress overlooks Geraci, juts out on the natural ledge to admire the treasures and gems of Sicily. From here the rulers of the island wrote the most beautiful and most exhilarating pages of the history of Geraci, the Ventimiglias and Sicily.
