Chiesa di Sant'Anna

Ultima modifica 14 febbraio 2024

In essa si legge: “Anno Incarnati Verbi MCCCXI - Nome Indicione - Regnante Domino Nostro Federico III - Excellentissimo Rege Sicilie - Regni Eius Anno XVI - Nos Franciscus Comes Vigintimilii - Yscle Maioris Giracii Dominus Utriusque Petralie - Incepimus Hanc Ecclesiam Beate  Gloriose Virginis... Matris... Edificare

ACQUASANTIERA :  In pietra scolpita. E’ infissa nel muro di sinistra.

CHURCH OF SANT'ANNA

The small church of Sant'Anna al Castello is believed to have been the Palatine Chapel of the Ventimiglia family and therefore its history is closely linked to the cultural-historical events of the lord of Geraci.

A marble plaque placed under the arch of the left wall, written in the Latin language of decadence, informs us that the Chapel was built by Count Francesco I Ventimiglia of Geraci in 1311 after inheriting the county from his father Alduino. In it we read, "Anno Incarnati Verbi MCCCXI - Nome Indicione - Regnante Domino Nostro Federico III - Excellentissimo Rege Sicilie - Regni Eius Anno XVI - Nos Franciscus Comes Vigintimilii - Yscle Maioris Giracii Dominus Utriusque Petralie - Incepimus Hanc Ecclesiam Beate Gloriose Virginis... Matris... Edify."

Translation: "The year of the Incarnate Word 1311, during the ninth legislature ( ?) reigning Frederick III our lord, most excellent King of Sicily, in the 16th year of his reign, we Francis ... of Ventimiglia, lord of the greater County of Geraci and of the two Petralie we undertook to build this Church of the Mother of the Blessed Glorious Virginis ..."

It puzzles the year of construction of the Church, because historical sources tell us that since 1240 the front part of the "Skull of St. Anne," a gift of the Duke of Lorraine to his great-grandfather William, was venerated and kept in the Palatine Chapel of the Castle, already built by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia - "Cappellam Castri nostri Geracii in Sicilia" and entrusted to "Nicolao Terciario Cappellano sacri palatii nostri."  It is probable that this we are dealing with is not the Palatine Chapel, but a Church built within the walls of the manor house later as thanksgiving to the Mother of Mary for some grace received. In 1454 the relic was permanently transferred to Castelbuono. Be that as it may, all this does not detract from the beauty of the Church. In fact, from the artifacts found in the reactivation of the windows, it can be deduced that the structure must have been a jewel of art.

Of the original elements remained the bases from which start the ribs that in the shape of a "cross" come together in two checkerboards in the vault. The bases consist of small columns with capitals that in groups of three rest in the side walls on bases depicting animal heads and flowers (daisies). These elements had been defaced and hidden by plaster and lime, now cleaned up they appear in living stone.

Not so were the four columns, two of which are spiral-shaped, found on either side of the apse. In carrying out the cleaning work it was discovered that they were not the original ones, which had been remade with kneaded plaster and reeds (the pieces are visible in the left arch). They were redone on the same design in Melilli stone. The interior plasters were found to be smooth. They had to be cleaned.

A first, rather large rectangular-shaped window was found high up on the right interior wall near the apse. Perhaps it was an opening communicating with the count's apartments, from where it was possible to attend religious services. Another window was found in the center of the "Gothic" style apse, while a third window in the shape of an ox-eye was found high up in the central portal wall. The windows were restored and highlighted. So have all the decorative artistic elements, which stand out in all their beauty. Along with the windows, the two "niches" located on either side of the apse were restored.

The flooring was redone in special Tuscan terracotta. The rustic stone altar is well suited to the early Gothic style of the Church.

The restoration of the Church was possible thanks to the generous financial contribution of our Geracesi emigrants to the USA.

THE WORKS.

CANVAS OF THE NATIVITY OF MARY : The large painting, a canvas painting attributed to Giuseppe Salerno, known as "lo Zoppo di Gangi," has not only artistic, but above all religious-cultural importance.

The painting depicts the nativity of the Virgin Mary with scenes of intimate family life full of human values.  In it the figure of St. Anne, to whom the church is dedicated, stands out. St. Anne in fact is depicted seated at her bed, from where she can contemplate her newborn child, while St. Joachim in an adjoining small room seems absorbed in meditation and prayer. Below, some women care for the newborn.

Two religious events are held in this church each year: the July 26 feast of St. Anne and the September 8 feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary "Child." For St. Anne's, women awaiting childbirth are celebrated, and for the "Bambina" those who are already mothers, who offer toasted "chickpeas" to those present. These chickpeas later will be used by the faithful, who will throw them on the roofs of their houses, during storms to ward off danger and damage.

The fact that St. Anne is believed to be the patron saint of childbirth finds historical corroboration in the lives of the Ventimiglia family. Marquise Isabella, wife of Simone Ventimiglia, in 1457, in thanksgiving to St. Anne for her happy delivery, had entrusted talented artists with the Saint's relic so that they might enclose it in a rich composition consisting of a pedestal and an artistic silver half-bust, as found today in the church of St. Anne at Castelbuono Castle.
