Biblioteca Comunale "Padre Gianmaria Carapezza da Geraci"

La Biblioteca Comunale di Geraci Siculo è di antica istituzione, si presume sia sorta in concomitanza di quegli avvenimenti storici intorno al 1866 che secondo le leggi  anticlericali dello Stato liberale , portarono alla sop­pressione degli Ordini Ecclesiastici e all'incameramento di tutti i beni mobili ed immobili dei conventi e dei monasteri.

Anche a Geraci Siculo intorno a quegli anni venne soppresso il locale con­vento dei Padri Cappuccini, eretto con Bolla della Sacra Congregazione dei Vesco­vi e dei Regolari del 3/3/1689, la cui ricchissima Biblioteca o "Libreria", come spesso è chiamata nei documenti, passa direttamente ai Beni Demaniali del Comune. Tuttavia l'antica istituzione della Biblioteca si può appurare con fondata certezza da un documento prezioso che si conserva nell'Archivio Storico Comunale(1892).

Il documento citato è una lettera proveniente dalla Sottoprefettura del Cir­condario di Cefalù del 7/2/1892, oggetto: "Ricorso del Bibliotecario Antonino Fi­lippone". La nota del Sottoprefetto di Cefalù è indirizzata direttamente al Sin­daco del Comune di Geraci Siculo è prende in alta considerazione il ricorso del Bibliotecario Antonino Filippone, licenziato, a quanto si evince dalla nota del Sottoprefetto "Ipso Facto", senza un serio motivo infatti, così leggiamo testual­mente sul prezioso documento: ".... A me pare afferma il Sottoprefetto di Cefalù, che il ricorrente abbia tutta la ragione da restare in servizio a tutto l'anno 1892. Non è senza una preventiva disdetta che si licenzia un impiegato "Ipso­Facto", e tanto meno poi come può Codesto Consiglio Comunale ad un anno incomin­ciato, quando il Filippone era in pieno diritto di ritenersi in funzione." Quin­di, grazie a questo atto d'Archivio, si può affermare, senza ombra di dubbio che la Biblioteca Comunale di Geraci Siculo era già funzionante nella seconda mettà del secolo XIX. Certamente  non possiamo fornire una data certa della sua fondazione ed istituzione ma alcune notizie storiche ci danno la certezza dell'antica istituzione di questa Biblioteca Comunale:

1) La soppressione del Convento dei PP.Cappuccini e il conseguente incameramento dei beni intorno al 1866;

2) Il prezioso documento della Sottoprefettura di Cefalù.

Nella prima mettà del '900 la Biblioteca Comunale, già ubicata alla fine dell'800 in alcuni locali del Monastero Benedettino di S. Caterina V.M. incamera­ti al patrimonio comunale nel 1866/67 (ove attualmente trovasi ubicata definiti­vamente) subisce purtroppo vari spostamenti con la grave conseguenza del "depau­peramento del ricco patrimonio librario. In questi primi anni del '900 fin qua­si alla seconda mettà di questo secolo la Biblioteca viene gestita dal Sac. Prof. Don Giacomo Scancarello. Nel secondo dopoguerra la storia della Biblioteca regi­stra il primo spostamento dai locali del detto Monastero Benedettino a quello del Palazzo Castello, sito in Via Vittorio Emanuele dove nella seconda mettà del '900 trova sede la nascente Scuola Media . In seguito la Biblioteca venne trasferita nell'artistica sacrestia del Duomo e ancora, da questa sede alla Casa Canonica sita in P.zza del Popolo. Morto il Bibliotecario Prof. Don Giacomo Scan­carello, nella inoltrata seconda mettà del '900 ne assume la direzione, dietro designazione dell'allora Sindaco Dr. Giuseppe Spallina, il Sac. Stefano Neglia, il quale rinnova e arricchisce la Biblioteca che trova, nel frattempo, una ulteriore si­stemazione in una sala della Residenza Municipale. Nel 1981 finalmente la Biblioteca dopo tanto peregrinare ritorna nella sua sede originale, cioè nel plesso di Via Francesco Ventimiglia n. 47 (già Via Maggiore). Nel 1982 viene intitolata a "PADRE GIAMMARIA CARAPEZZA DA GERACI", illustre Cappuccino.

All'interno si trova una tela di Joseph De Galbo 1794, pittore Castelbuonese, che raffi­gura la Trasfigurazione di Cristo tra Mosè ed Elia in presenza degli apostoli Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni. Proviene dalla Chiesa del SS.Salvatore.

MUNICIPAL LIBRARY "PADRE GIANMARIA CARAPEZZA DA GERACI"

The Municipal Library of Geraci Siculo is an ancient institution, is assumed to be as old as those historical events around the 1866 se¬condo the anti-clerical laws of the liberal state, led to the soppressione Orders Ecclesiastical and escheat of all movable and immovable property of the convents and monasteries.

Even in Geraci Siculo around those years was suppressed the local con¬vento of the Capuchin Fathers, erected by a Bull of the Sacred Congregation of Vescovi and Regulars of 03/03/1689, whose rich Biblioteca or "Library", as is often is named in the documents, go directly to the Goods Demaniali of the City. However, the oldest institution of the library you can ascertain with certezza founded by a valuable document that is preserved in the Historical City (1892).

The document cited is a letter from the Governor's Circondario Cefalu of 07/02/1892, subject: "Action Librarian Antonino Filippone." The note of the sub-prefect of Cefalu is addressed directly to Sindaco the City of Geraci Siculo is taken into high consideration the use of the Librarian Antonio Filippone, licensed, it is clear from the note of Sub-prefect "Ipso Facto" without a serious reason in fact as well integrated as read-mind on the precious document: ".... It seems to me says the Sub-prefect of Cefalu, that the applicant has all the reason to remain in service throughout the year 1892 is not without a prior notice that firing an employee "Ipso-Facto", much less then how can Codest City Council one year incominciato when Filippone was fully entitled to be considered in function. " Quindi, thanks to this act of Archives, we can say, without a shadow of a doubt that the Municipal Library of Geraci Siculo was already functioning in the second put the nineteenth century. Certainly we can not provide an exact date of its foundation and establishment but some historical information give us the certainty of the ancient institution of this Municipal Library:

1) The abolition of the Convent of PP.Cappuccini and the subsequent confiscation of around 1866;

2) The valuable document of the Sub-Prefecture of Cefalu.

In the first put '900 the Municipal Library, located to the 800 already in some of the local Benedictine Monastery of St. Catherine VM incamerati to municipal assets in 1866/67 (where he currently is found located definiti¬vamente) has unfortunately suffered various movements with the serious consequence of the "depauperamento's rich collection of books. During these early years of the 'quasi 900 since the second Put this century, the Library is managed by the Sac. Prof. Don Giacomo Scancarello. After World War II history of the Library registra the first movement from the premises of the said Benedictine Monastery in the Palace Castle, located in Via Vittorio Emanuele where in the second Put '900 is the seat of the nascent Middle School. Subsequently, the library was moved in artistic sacristy of the Cathedral and again, from here to the Rectory House, located in Piazza del Popolo. Died Librarian Prof. Don Giacomo Scan-cart , in the forwarded according Put '900 it takes over behind the designation of the then Mayor Dr. Joseph Pad, the Sac. Stefano Neglia, which renews and enriches the Library that is, meanwhile, a further sistemazione in a room of the Residence Hall. In 1981 the Library finally after much wandering back to its original location, ie in the plexus of Via Francesco Ventimiglia n. 47 (formerly Via Maggiore). In 1982 he was named "PADRE giammaria Carapezza DA GERACI" illustrious Cappuccino.

Inside is a painting by Joseph De Galbo 1794 Castelbuono painter, who raffigura the Transfiguration of Christ between Moses and Elijah in the presence of the apostles Peter, James and John. It comes from the Church of SS.Salvatore.
